Using Cultural Examples and Traditions to Glorify God
This truth addresses the heart's desire to bring glory to God in all aspects of life, including cultural expressions and traditions. Paul writes in Romans 8:28 that "all things work together for good" for those who love God, which includes the cultural context in which we live. By recognizing the sovereignty of God over all things, we can use our cultural examples and traditions to proclaim His Word and bring Him glory. This means being mindful of how our cultural expressions can be used to point to the gospel, rather than being conformed to the world.
As Reformed theologians, we recognize that all of life is to be lived under the lordship of Christ, and that includes our cultural traditions and expressions. By using our cultural examples to glorify God, we are acknowledging His sovereignty over all things and recognizing that He is the one who gives meaning and purpose to our cultural expressions. This is not about using cultural examples as a means of earning favor with God, but rather as a way of acknowledging His grace and goodness in all aspects of life.
In this way, our cultural traditions and expressions can become a means of proclaiming the gospel and bringing glory to God, rather than being a hindrance to the spread of His Word. By recognizing the gospel connection to all of life, we can use our cultural examples to point to the redemption that is found in Christ, and to bring hope and joy to those around us. This is a key aspect of Reformed theology, which recognizes that all of life is to be lived under the lordship of Christ, and that our cultural expressions are no exception.
