Using Examples Faithfully in Biblical Teaching and Preaching
The faithful use of examples in biblical teaching and preaching involves drawing upon the lives and actions of biblical figures, including Christ himself, to illustrate theological truths and encourage godly living. This practice is rooted in the biblical text, which frequently presents individuals as models to emulate or avoid [5, 23].
Christ is consistently presented as the ultimate example for believers. He demonstrated sincerity (1 Peter 2:22) [1], diligence (Mark 1:35; Luke 2:49) [2], holy boldness (John 7:26) [3], liberality (2 Corinthians 8:9) [4], and early rising for devotion (Mark 1:35) [6]. The Apostle Peter explicitly states that Christ left believers an example to follow in his footsteps (1 Peter 2:21) [5]. Similarly, John Chrysostom, an early Church Father, frequently referenced Christ's actions and teachings in his homilies, often drawing parallels between Old Testament narratives and Christ's fulfillment of them [14, 16, 20].
Beyond Christ, the Bible offers numerous other examples. Pastors and teachers are called to be examples to their flocks (Philippians 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Timothy 4:12; 1 Peter 5:3) [5]. Paul exhorted Timothy to "set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12 BSB) [7]. Titus was likewise instructed to be "an example of good works" in all things, including integrity and seriousness in his teaching (Titus 2:7) [11]. The Apostle Paul himself presented his own diligent labor as an example for others, emphasizing the words of Jesus, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35) [10].
The lives of Old Testament figures also serve as instructive examples. Matthew Henry, a Nonconformist commentator, noted that the book of Hebrews presents "illustrious examples" of faith from the Old Testament, some with detailed accounts and others mentioned more generally [23]. The experiences of the Jews are presented as a warning (Hebrews 4:11), and the prophets as examples of enduring affliction (James 5:10) [5]. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joshua, Gideon, Samuel, and David are all cited for their practice of early rising in devotion and duty [6].
The faithful use of examples in teaching and preaching involves more than mere storytelling; it connects specific actions and lives to broader theological principles. For instance, the "work of faith" is not merely an intellectual assent but a "working reality" that manifests in continuous action, as described in 1 Thessalonians 1:3 [15]. This understanding aligns with the idea that faith is demonstrated through its fruits [15]. The Geneva Bible translation of Psalm 90:12, "Teach vs so to nomber our dayes, that we may apply our heartes vnto wisdome," suggests a practical application of biblical wisdom to daily life [9].
The Reformed tradition, as seen in John Calvin's commentaries, frequently engages with biblical narratives to draw out theological and ethical lessons [12, 13, 17, 19, 21, 22]. Similarly, the Eastern Orthodox tradition, through figures like John Chrysostom, emphasizes the moral and spiritual lessons embedded in biblical examples [14, 16, 18, 20]. The goal is to move beyond abstract concepts to concrete illustrations that resonate with the audience, helping them to "understand the teaching of your precepts" and "meditate on your wondrous works" (Psalm 119:27) [8].
