Using Extrabiblical Examples in Biblical Preaching and Teaching
Biblical preaching and teaching primarily draw from the Scriptures themselves, but the use of extrabiblical examples can serve to illustrate or clarify biblical truths. The Bible itself uses various forms of illustration, such as parables, which are comparisons or similitudes used to explain one subject by another [2].
The New Testament frequently presents Christ as the ultimate example for believers in various aspects of life. For instance, Christ is an example of sincerity (1 Peter 2:22) [3], intercessory prayer (Luke 22:32; 23:34; John 17:9-24) [4], self-denial (Matthew 4:8-10; 8:20; John 6:38; Romans 15:3; Philippians 2:6-8) [5], and even early rising (Mark 1:35; Luke 21:38; John 8:2) [6]. Pastors are also called to be examples to their flocks (Philippians 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:9; 1 Timothy 4:12; 1 Peter 5:3) [1]. The Old Testament provides examples as warnings, such as the Jews in Hebrews 4:11, and the prophets as examples of suffering affliction in James 5:10 [1].
While the Bible provides numerous internal examples, the practice of using extrabiblical examples in preaching and teaching often extends to contemporary illustrations, historical anecdotes, or personal experiences. The purpose of such examples is to make abstract biblical concepts more relatable or understandable to the audience. However, the core of Christian teaching remains "the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that is in accordance with godliness" (1 Timothy 6:3 LEB) [8], and the "preaching the Kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance" (Acts 28:31) [7].
The use of extrabiblical examples should always be subservient to the biblical text, serving to illuminate rather than overshadow the scriptural message. The goal is to help listeners grasp the biblical truth more effectively, not to replace it with human wisdom or experience.
