Using Suffering to Help Others in Christian Witness
Suffering, when understood within a framework of Christian witness, can serve as a means to help others. This perspective is rooted in biblical teachings and further developed in theological reflection. The Apostle Paul, for instance, encourages believers not to be ashamed of the testimony of the Lord or of those who suffer for it, but rather to "join me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God" [1]. This suggests that suffering is not merely an unfortunate circumstance but can be actively embraced as part of one's commitment to the gospel.
One way suffering aids witness is by enabling empathy and compassionate ministry. The author of Hebrews states that because Christ himself "suffered, himself being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted" [2]. This highlights a principle where shared experience of hardship equips one to minister to others facing similar trials [5]. Similarly, Paul's own experiences of suffering allowed him to enter sympathetically into the experiences of those he ministered to, demonstrating that he was not an "aloof pastor" [9].
Paul also articulates a paradox where weakness in suffering leads to strength. He declares, "Wherefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong" [3, 4]. This strength is not merely personal resilience but a capacity to bear witness more effectively. The "testimony of Christ" refers to the gospel itself, which proclaims Christ crucified and redemption through his blood [10]. While the world might see reason to be ashamed of a crucified savior, the power of the gospel transforms this shame into a cause for exultation [10].
The concept of self-denial is closely related to this understanding of suffering. Christ himself set an example of self-denial, which is presented as a test of devotion and a necessary aspect of following him [6]. Patient endurance under undeserved suffering is considered acceptable to God, with Christ's example serving as the ultimate proof [8].
