You Were Chosen Before the Foundation of the World

Did you know election isn't a hidden abstract doctrine — it's the address on the envelope? Peter opens his letter by calling ordinary Christians eklektoi ("chosen ones") and immediately grounds their election in the Trinity. Your salvation was worked out in eternity past by Father, Son, and Spirit before you were born.

The Greek — eklektoi (ἐκλεκτοί).

From eklegō — "to pick out, to select." Eklektoi is the noun-form used throughout the NT for the elect:

— 1 Peter 1:1 — "to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion."
— Colossians 3:12 — "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved…"
— Romans 8:33 — "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?"
— Matthew 22:14 — "many are called, but few are chosen."
— 1 Peter 2:9 — "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation."

Election isn't an OT category replaced by "faith." It's Peter's, Paul's, and Jesus's category for the church.

1 Peter 1:1-2 — the Trinitarian ground of election.

"Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who are elect exiles of the dispersion… according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you."

One of the tightest Trinitarian formulas in the New Testament. Peter names all three Persons of the Godhead as active in the election of every believer.

The Father — foreknowledge. Prognōsis (πρόγνωσις) — not bare divine foresight (as if God passively looked ahead and noticed who would believe), but fore-loving, fore-choosing-relationally. The Father set His love on the elect before creation.

The Spirit — sanctification. The Spirit's ongoing work in the elect — regeneration, indwelling, progressive holiness. Election flows through the Spirit's sanctifying application.

The Son — obedience and blood. "Sprinkling with His blood" echoes Exodus 24:8 — Moses at Sinai sprinkling the covenant blood on the people to seal the covenant. Christ's blood is the new covenant sprinkling, and the elect are those it covers.

Father foreknew. Spirit sanctifies. Son redeems. All three Persons active in one covenant of grace.

Jesus's own words — John 15:16.

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit."

The order is decisive: Christ's choice precedes and grounds the disciple's response. Ephesians 1:4-5 confirms: "He chose us in him before the foundation of the world… he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ."

The Reformed doctrine — unconditional election.

Canons of Dort 1.7 (1618-19): "Election is God's unchangeable purpose whereby, before the foundation of the world, he has out of mere grace chosen in Christ… a certain number of specific people out of the entire human race."

Westminster Confession 3.5: God chose the elect "in Christ, unto everlasting glory, out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith or good works… as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto; and all to the praise of His glorious grace."

Romans 8:33-39 anchors the assurance: "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies… nothing in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

The pastoral implication:

Election is often received as a fearful doctrine ("am I chosen?"), but Peter, Paul, and John treat it as the deepest comfort. If salvation depended on your grip on God, you would slip. Every one of us has seasons where our grip is weaker than it should be.

But if salvation depends on His grip on you — if the Father chose you before creation, if the Spirit sanctifies you now, if the Son's blood covers you — then your salvation is anchored where you cannot lose it. The elect DO believe, DO repent, DO endure — but they do so because the Trinity is at work in them.

You didn't choose Him first. He chose you first.

Your salvation isn't your grip on God. It's His grip on you.
