The Greek Word for "Saved" Also Means Healed and Rescued
Did you know the Greek word Christians translate as "saved" (sōzō, σῴζω) also means healed, rescued, delivered, preserved, and made whole? Modern Christians flattened it to one thing — "going to heaven when you die." The Greek is bigger. Christ saves the WHOLE person.
The Word — Sōzō (σῴζω):
Sōzō appears approximately 106 times in the New Testament. Its semantic range includes:
— Physical rescue from danger (storms, drowning, death)
— Healing from disease or injury
— Deliverance from enemies or oppression
— Preservation of life
— Spiritual salvation of the soul
— Final/eschatological salvation at Christ's return
All one word in Greek. All contexts, same lexeme.
Examples Across the Range:
Matthew 8:25 — "Lord, save us [sōzō]; we are perishing!" The disciples in the storm. Physical rescue.
Mark 5:34 — "Daughter, your faith has made you well [sōzō]; go in peace, and be healed of your disease." The hemorrhaging woman. Healing.
Luke 7:50 — "Your faith has saved [sōzō] you; go in peace." The sinful woman at Jesus's feet. Spiritual salvation.
John 3:17 — "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved [sōzō] through him." Cosmic/eschatological.
Acts 16:30-31 — Philippian jailer: "What must I do to be saved [sōzō]?" Paul: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." Spiritual salvation.
Romans 10:9 — "if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord... you will be saved [sōzō]." Future tense.
Ephesians 2:8 — "For by grace you have been saved [sōzō] through faith." Past tense.
1 Corinthians 1:18 — "to us who are being saved [sōzō] it is the power of God." Present progressive.
All Three Tenses:
Sōzō appears in past, present, and future tenses — reflecting the Reformed "already / not-yet" structure of salvation:
— Past: "you have been saved" (Eph 2:8) — justification completed
— Present: "those who are being saved" (1 Cor 1:18) — sanctification in process
— Future: "you will be saved" (Rom 10:9) — glorification coming
Modern English "saved" collapses all three into one, usually weighted toward the future ("I'm going to heaven"). The Greek keeps all three distinct and complementary.
The Reformed Reading — Holistic Redemption:
Comprehensive redemption. Reformed soteriology (Herman Bavinck, Michael Horton) holds that Christ's atonement effects comprehensive redemption — not just souls floating to heaven, but body and soul, now and in the resurrection, personal and cosmic.
Not Platonic/Gnostic. Reformed theology rejects the "soul-only" afterlife flattening of salvation. The resurrection of the body (1 Cor 15; Rom 8:23) is essential to Christian hope. Sōzō's inclusion of healing and physical rescue aligns with this.
New heavens and new earth. Final salvation is cosmic (Rev 21-22; Rom 8:19-23). Not an escape from creation but creation renewed. Reformed eschatology grounds comprehensive salvation in the new-creation framework.
Christus Victor + Reformed. Christ's work rescues from sin, death, Satan, and all powers (Col 2:15). Sōzō in physical-rescue contexts reflects this victory motif.

The Pastoral Implication:
If "saved" has only ever meant "going to heaven when I die" for you, the Greek calls for more. Sōzō includes:
— The rescue when you were drowning
— The healing when you were sick
— The deliverance when enemies pressed
— The preservation of life day by day
— The spiritual salvation of your soul
— The resurrection of your body at the last day
— The final restoration of all creation
One Greek word. Christ saves the WHOLE person. Body and soul. Here and forever.
