Balancing Righteous Indignation and Anger in Christian Living
In Christian thought, anger is understood as an emotion that is not inherently sinful but can become so depending on its cause, intensity, and duration [1]. The Bible distinguishes between sinful anger, which is forbidden, and a righteous indignation that mirrors God's own displeasure with sin [1, 3].
Sinful anger is frequently condemned in Scripture. It is identified as a "work of the flesh" in Galatians 5:20 and is associated with foolishness, pride, cruelty, clamor, malice, and strife [3, 11]. Proverbs warns that a "wrathful man stirs up contention" [6], and Ecclesiastes advises against quick temper, stating that "anger resides in the bosom of fools" [3]. Such anger can lead to sin, as indicated in Psalms 37:8, which exhorts believers to "Abstain from anger and cease from fury; also do not inflame yourself to do evil" [2, 3]. The apostle Paul instructs believers to "put off all these: anger, wrath, malice" (Colossians 3:8), emphasizing that these passions are contrary to the gospel's design and possess significant malignity [11]. John Chrysostom, an early Church Father, viewed wrath as a "fierce fire" that devours all things and harms both body and soul, urging believers to guard against its entrance and to tame their "savage minds" [15]. He also taught that true victory over anger is not retaliation but meekly enduring ill-treatment [14].
However, the Bible also presents a concept of righteous anger. Easton's Bible Dictionary defines anger as "the emotion of instant displeasure on account of something evil that presents itself to our view," noting that it is an original susceptibility of human nature, like love, and not necessarily sinful [1]. This aligns with the instruction in Ephesians 4:26, "Be ye angry, and sin not." This verse, which echoes Psalm 4:4 in the Septuagint, suggests that anger can be legitimate when directed towards its proper object and kept within due bounds [12, 13]. For instance, Christ's anger, as seen in Mark 3:5, is cited as an example of anger without sin [12]. This righteous indignation is characterized by displeasure at dishonor done to God and wrong done to humanity [12].
God himself is described as experiencing anger, which is understood not as a human passion but as his righteous displeasure with sin and sinners [1, 10]. Jeremiah 21:5 speaks of God fighting "in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation" [5]. This divine anger is righteous and just [4]. However, God's anger is also characterized by slowness and can be averted by Christ, through faith, and by confession and repentance [4, 10]. John Gill, a Baptist commentator, explains that anger is not properly in God as a simple, unchangeable being, but rather describes his actions that appear similar to human anger, such as turning away or chastising [10].
The challenge for Christians lies in balancing these two aspects of anger. The goal is to avoid sinful anger, which is often connected with revenge, strife, and a contentious spirit [3, 7, 9]. Instead of seeking revenge, believers are called to trust in God, exhibit love, and overcome evil with kindness [9]. Christian conduct emphasizes believing and fearing God, loving and obeying Christ, and living righteously [8]. The transformation of the believer involves laying aside the "old self" and its sinful passions, including anger and malice, as Christ lives within them [11, 16]. This new life in Christ leads to righteous living, which involves right behavior demanded by God [17].
