God's Selfless Giving in Scripture and Example
God's character is consistently portrayed in scripture as one of abundant giving and mercy. This divine generosity is described as great, rich, manifold, plenteous, and everlasting [6, 8]. God is the ultimate source of consolation in affliction [3] and the giver of reproof to both the righteous and the wicked [2]. The divine mercy is not only vast but also tender, new every morning, and delights in extending itself [6].
The concept of God's selfless giving is profoundly demonstrated through the person of Jesus Christ. Christ is presented as the author and giver of consolation [3] and the ultimate example of liberality [4]. The apostle Paul highlights this in 2 Corinthians, noting that Christ, though rich, became poor for the sake of humanity, so that through his poverty, others might become rich with the blessings of salvation [9]. This self-giving sacrifice is the model for generous giving [9]. Christ also set an example for the forgiveness of injuries, even commanding his followers to forgive without limit [5]. The words of Jesus, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," underscore this principle of selfless giving [7].
